In Abuja, authorities confirmed that armed attackers ambushed a commercial bus in Benue State, kidnapping several passengers, including students who were traveling to sit for their university examinations.

The incident occurred on Thursday along the Otukpo–Makurdi highway, according to a statement issued by the state governor, Hyacinth Alia. While the exact number of victims was not officially disclosed, local reports suggest that about 14 individuals were on the bus at the time of the attack.

Governor Alia strongly condemned the incident, describing the abduction of innocent civilians—especially students pursuing their education—as a serious violation of societal values and human decency.

He also assured the public that security agencies have launched active search-and-rescue operations aimed at securing the release of those taken.

As of now, no group has come forward to claim responsibility for the attack. Benue State has long struggled with recurring violence, as armed groups frequently target rural communities and travelers for attacks and ransom kidnappings.

The kidnapping of students has increasingly become a troubling pattern across Nigeria, with experts noting that such targets often attract widespread public attention, making them strategically appealing to criminal groups.

The governor urged residents to stay calm and support ongoing security efforts, emphasizing that the government remains committed to taking firm measures to safeguard lives and property.
